James Nelson Environmental Education Internship (This Position has been Filled!)
Position Summary:
The James Nelson Environmental Education Internship was established in memory of James Nelson. James, his wife, Patricia, and their family have been involved with Riveredge for many years. The family and the business they founded, Nelson Container Corporation, have been generous supporters since 1979. This internship is a unique opportunity for a person just entering the environmental education field who is willing to learn and work with a dedicated group of staff and volunteers. The Intern will work with Riveredge educational staff to assist primarily with Riveredge School Programs. Depending on the goals of the selected Intern, she/he may also assist with, observe and lead Youth and Family Programs. If the Intern chooses to take college and university credit with this program, Riveredge staff will work with him/her to fulfill requirements when applicable.
Reports to: Sunny Knutson, Director of Youth and Family Education
Hours:
This is a part-time, flexible position. On average, the Intern will agree to work 12-16 hours per week. While most hours will take place during the Monday-Friday workweek, some weekend hours may be included.
Employment Duration: August 30, 2010 – June 10, 2011
Please note there is a possibility this internship may be extended beyond this date.
Salary: $8.50 per hour (Position Filled 8-20-10)

Responsibilities/Essential Functions (include, but are not limited to):
- Observe, assist with and teach inquiry-based environmental education programs for school-aged children.
- Assist with and teach other Youth and Family environmental education programs during weekends.
- Assist with special education events such as the Great Outdoors Weekend and Maple Sugarin’ Open House.
- Assist in maintaining educational equipment for Youth and Family programs.
- Participate in Teacher Naturalist training days.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Working toward or completed an undergraduate degree in natural sciences, teaching, environmental education or related area.
- Experience working with children of a variety of ages.
- Naturalist skills a plus.

The Intern will work with Riveredge educational staff to assist with Riveredge School Programs. Depending on the goals of the selected Intern, she/he may also assist, observe, and lead Youth and Family Programs as well as Adult Programs. If the Intern chooses to take college and university credit with this program, Riveredge staff will work with him/her to fulfill requirements when applicable.
Reports to: Riveredge Education Staff
Hours: This is a volunteer, flexible position. On average, the Intern will agree to work 12 hours per week. While most hours will take place during the Monday-Friday workweek, some weekend and evening hours may be included.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
1. Observe, assist with and teach inquiry-based environmental education programs for school-aged children.
2. Assist with and teach other Youth and Family environmental education programs during evenings and weekends.
3. Assist with preparation and delivery of Nature Journeys Summer Camp programs.
4. Teach Summer Day Adventure programs.
5. Assist in staffing the Visitor Center on occasional weekends.
6. Assist with special education events such as the Maple Sugarin’ Open House and Poke Around the Prairie.
7. Assist in maintaining educational equipment for Youth and Family programs.
8. Help maintain the Organic Garden.
9. Other duties as assigned.

In addition to the training inherent in observing, assisting with and teaching Riveredge Environmental Education Programs, Riveredge provides 10 full-day monthly continuing education opportunities for all Interns and Teacher Naturalist Volunteers. These training days provide hands-on opportunities to explore the 370-acre preserve and gain a better understanding of natural history, environmental science concepts, as well as methods for fostering learner-centered education that is inclusive, flexible and responsive.

Marketing Intern (Volunteer)
Position Summary: Come work with a dedicated group of staff, Board members and volunteers at a beautiful nature sanctuary that has a tremendous positive impact on the environment. The Marketing Intern is responsible for assistance in planning and implementing promotional activities and projects related to maintaining and building the Center’s visibility. The goal of the internship is to help attract and increase the number of members, visitors, students and volunteers to the Center, while providing an exceptional educational opportunity for professional experience. The Intern collaborates and partners with other departments at the Center. This Internship is currently unpaid. Please see www.riveredge.us for information about Riveredge.
Reports to: Executive Director
Hours: This is a part time position with flexible hours. Some of the work may be done offsite. The Intern is expected to work approximately 8-16 hours a week.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Included but not limited to the following:
1. Marketing planning: Help develop and implement a professional marketing program that promotes all service areas, including educational programs, community and member events, facility rental and special projects.
2. Publications/Communications: May include help with newsletter, brochures, posters, bulk e-mailing, community outreach; represent Riveredge in the community as appropriate.
3. Special events: Help organize, staff and implement events.
4. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience:
- University level coursework in marketing, communications, public relations or journalism; or similar education.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of and expertise in the use of personal computers.
