RIVEREDGE STURGEON FEST

Celebrate Sturgeon Fest with Riveredge! Sponsor and release your own sturgeon in the Milwaukee River.   This is a family event, with special children’s
activities, a live reptile and animal educational display and, returning this year, a special ceremonial drumming and blessing of the sturgeon by the Potawatomi. 
Food will be available throughout the event.
 
 
“Verdi” by Janell Cannon
Children’s Library Story Time
Saturday, October 2, 10 – 11:30am
How would you like to climb a tree with a big green snake called Verdi? Come hear this beautiful book about a python named the Verdi. This program will include crafts and games and treats on the theme of snakes. Find out about snakes at Riveredge. Fee: Free (Donations appreciated)
 
 
BIGBY – Big Green Birding Year
Riveredge Bird Club & Lecture Series
Tuesday, October 5, 6pm Hike, Program 7-9pm
This program could also be titled, Self-propelled Birders Birding Locally for a
Year.  Scott Baughman demonstrates how one can successfully bike or walk
to birding areas close to home and save gas and reduce your carbon footprint. Fee: Free
 
 
Riveredge Master Naturalist Series
Adult Program
Thursday, October 7, 9 – 3pm, New Perspectives
Designed for new and experienced naturalists, these programs provide foundational training in ecology, natural history, and living systems. Canoe Trip: On the Trail of the Sturgeon
Return the Sturgeon
Saturday, October 9, 9-5pm
Join our canoe flotilla as we follow the recently released sturgeon on their way to Lake Michigan. Learn about the sonic tags implanted in the fish and hydrophone receivers used to track their progress towards the lake. Enjoy the rustic scenery and parks along the shoreline of the Milwaukee River. Visit the potential future spawning grounds of the sturgeon. Shoot the riffles of the river as is meanders its way toward the city of Milwaukee. Participants must be able to carry a canoe over a short portage. Dress for the weather and bring a lunch. Call to register. Deadline October 5. Fee due when registering. Rain date October 10.

Fall Colors
Family Program
Saturday, October 9, 1-3pm
Come capture the patterns and colors of fall! We will hike through our woods to enjoy the colors of the forest and collect leaves for a print making process using our leaf collections. Bring a cotton cloth item to make your print such as a blank t- shirt, light colored cloth napkins, pillow covers or tote bags. We will be using paints that do not wash out, so wear clothes that you don’t mind getting paint spots on. You may purchase printing fabric for $5. Pre-registration is suggested.

Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf
Nature Tots: environmental education for children ages 3-5 
Wednesday, October 13, 10–11:30am
Explore the fall season at Riveredge! We will begin by reading Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert, and see what a good friend a tree can be. Then, we will hike the trails and listen to the leaves crunching beneath our feet. You will take home a part of the Fall Season too. Pre-registration suggested.

Seeds Festival for Daisy Girl Scouts
Saturday, October 16, 1-2:30pm
Meet “Jenny” Appleseed and learn how to make apple cider; hunt for seeds in the forest and field; and learn about a current project at Riveredge to manage invasive plants.  You will also make a creative masterpiece to take back to your troop’s meeting place to remind you of your adventures.  This program helps your troop earn their Firefly Award (learn nature-related skills) and Clover Award (learn about natural areas). 
Pre-registration required.

Meet Me in the Tree House
Children’s Story Hour
Thursday, October 21, 10:30-Noon
We will have fun doing some indoor and outdoor science experiments geared for the little ones. So meet at the outdoor tree house and we will go from there. A snack will be included, but feel free to bring a bag lunch for a picnic with the other participants. Appropriate for ages 3-5, but all ages will enjoy it! Please dress accordingly.

Family Fall Night Hike
Family Program
Saturday, October 23, 6-7 Skullduggery and Jack-O-Lanterns, 7-8:30pm Night Hike
Come and explore if you dare…….We will begin our evening of mystery looking at bones and skulls. Who were they, and what secrets can their bones tell us about how they lived? We will make Jack-0-Lantern pumpkins to light our way home. Once the light of day fades into darkness, we will explore the nocturnal world of prairie and forest, to see who is prowling around in the night. Our adventure is rain or moon shine, so dress for the weather. Pre-registration suggested for the hike, but required for the jack-o-lantern carving.

Taste of the Future
An Introduction to the Riveredge – Wellspring CSA Collaborative
Saturday, October 23, 9am – Noon
Experience first hand how these two organizations are putting into practice permaculture design principles. Witness how they are restoring and managing their land in a holistic and sustainable way.   Learn about the collaboration that has spawned “a community –based permaculture and local foods project” called Woodland Harvest. Tour both properties to see how a diversity of woody and herbaceous plants are interwoven to mimic native ecosystems. Sample locally grown seasonal foods such as cider and hazelnut butter. Pre-registration required. Fee: Free
 
 
Hungarian Cooking
Food For Thought
Sunday, October 24, Noon – 4pm
Discover the diversity and richness of Hungarian cuisine, a tradition that grew out of the native abundance and ethnic influences of Slav's and Austrio-Germans as well as Ottoman Turks and mysterious gypsies. Tim Thomas will teach you how to make an authentic goulash, savory chicken paprikash with dumpling noodles and more, as we discover the vivid colors and flavors of the hearty Hungarian kitchen.

Riveredge Hiking Club
Sunday, October 24 at 3pm, Southern Holy Hill Segment
I couldn't think of a more colorful hike for October than the Holy Hill area.   This promises to be a hilly 3-4 mile hike with beautiful views.  We will be hiking the area Shannon Rd to Donegal Rd.   Park at the Holly Hill Trails Parking and picnic area.   Take St. Rd 167 going west 7.3 miles.   At Stations Way Rd. turn left and go south 0.1 miles to parking area.  Please call or email if you plan to attend.  262-353-5757 or judygn@sbcglobal.net.

Mystery at the ‘Edge
Delicious sleuthing at Riveredge Nature Center
Saturday, October 30, 5-9ish pm
An evening of mystery, entertainment, fun and great food. The theme is a “Riveredge Reunion – 1980.” The “Play’s the Thing” at this first annual Mystery Dinner at Riveredge Nature Center. Prior to dinner, guests will enjoy appetizers provided by Roots Restaurant, participate in a wine cork pull and have an opportunity to bid on one very special item (think Tom Uttech). Invite your friends and family. We have limited dining space, so make your reservations early. Cost is $100 per person. Check the website for details - www.riveredge.us. All proceeds will benefit the programs and mission of Riveredge.
